The Virginia State Police are reacting to news of a reduction in funding for Safety Service Patrols along the interstates just when they thought the program would be expanding.
Sgt. Bryan Hutcheson was looking forward to a Virginia Department of Transportation expansion of safety patrols, an expansion that is no longer in the works.
"Well, I know at several points in the past, VDOT had really begun implementing a program and getting it up here in Harrisonburg, because I think they've had success with it in the Staunton area," says Hutcheson.
Even with success, in tough economic times, some things have to go, and VDOT has announced reduced spending on the program.
"Yeah I would say it's unfortunate. This is a service that could be a great benefit to motorists out here. And it's a shame that it's probably going be one of those things that's not out there for them," adds Hutcheson.
So when it comes to stranded drivers on the interstates, they still have the option of called State Police. However, troopers can't come out with a spare tire or a can of gas.
Hutcheson says, "But we're not able to provide what VDOT can provide. We are emergency responders. We don't do repairs or anything like that. We just don't have the equipment or the time or the resources."
However, they say they might be able to call someone who can.
"So, it's basically just a matter of us calling a tow truck or something if the person needs that. Or just trying to make other arrangements to get them on their way," says Hutcheson.
The revised program runs from 2009 through 2014 and involves a $2 billion cut in funding statewide.
