The Page County landfill is in trouble once again, and this time, the Department of Environmental Quality is stepping in.
Page County hired National Waste Services to run the landfill, and since that time, the company has racked up nearly $200,000 in DEQ fines. The county says National Waste has also ignored warnings about violations from them. The DEQ believes the county has lost control of the landfill, and can by Virginia law shut it down.
"Because of the agreement that the county has with National Waste Services, some of our ability to actually control the operation there has been compromised," explains Page County Administrator Jerry Schiro.
Schiro says he's started to look for other dumping sites should the landfill be closed, but he doesn't know how the closing would affect the contract between the county and National Waste.
