The embezzlement case involving former members of the New Market Volunteer Fire Company is moving forward.
A Shenandoah County grand jury has indicted two women, Nancy Trumbo Mitchell and Sheila Hirsh, for embezzlement. The allegations surfaced last year.
Since then, the company's chief says he's taken a number of steps to restore the company's financial integrity.
He fired seven volunteers and he's hired a bookkeeper. He even changed the locks at the department.
"Our trust with the community, especially New Market, is back," says chief Matthew Hughes. "We've got a lot of support from the town of New Market and the Shenandoah County Fire and Rescue as well."
A county committee is recommending the Shenandoah County Board of Supervisors re-instate funding to the volunteer fire company. That will be brought up at the their next meeting in March.
The New Market Town Council isn't likely to consider re-instating its portion of the company's funding until spring. Town Manager Chris Boies says there's no rush to consider that since the town doesn't usually contribute its funds to the company until the end of the fiscal year, June 30.
