Officials with the Virginia Department of Transportation say snow removal trucks will be out working through Monday night.

However, due to budget cuts, VDOT may have to cut back its snow removal efforts next year.

Just as quickly as it fell, the snow started melting. That's good for emergency responders.

Lt. Jeff Hurst is with the Augusta County Fire Department. Bad weather or not, firefighters like him still have to work putting out blazes like the one that consumed a chicken house Monday.

"Weather like this does delay response to the point of being safe and getting there, because it's always better to get to the scene than having an accident and the person being delayed for service," says Hurst.

Virginia is facing a $2.6-billion transportation funding shortfall. A recent presentation to the Commonwealth Transportation Board outlines what that could mean to services like snow removal.

Some secondary roads that are supposed to receive a certain amount of service after 48 hours would see less snow removed in that time frame under the proposal. Some unpaved roads could remain impassable after 48 hours.

VDOT spokesperson Sandy Myers says the department is looking at scaling back literally everything.

She says, "Well, the standard that we've had so far is VDOT would be out to the neighborhoods, certainly having all roads have at least one pass within 48 hours after a storm. In some cases, the first pass might not even be until 48 hours after the storm."

Robbie Symons, chief of Rockingham County Fire and Rescue, says he's been able to rely on VDOT in the past during big storms. He hopes that at least can continue despite the budget shortfall.

"And, we've learned over the years to make due, make things work, and we get to where we need to go," says Symons.

If you've got something to say about the proposed service cuts, you'll have a chance to talk to VDOT officials. There's a public meeting March 12 at the Augusta County Government Center in Verona at 6:00 p.m.

Come on VDOT, no maintneance on the back roads is totally unacceptable! These new guidelines are a receipe for disaster. Think of the impacts to schools, fire and resuce, sheriffs department. Responding to all these accidents will cause our local real estate and personnel property taxes to raise in order to pay for all these additional staff and equipment!

Cutting back on snow removal next year is not a viable option! According to VDOTS web site their snow removal efforts ,as well as mowing & paving, on back roads will be scaled back drastically, or non existant next year. If they don't plow & salt the roads, then how will we be expected to get to work, children to school, poultry trucks in and out of farms, mail deleivered?! The VDOT guys in Luray do a great job at clearing our roads when it snows. If VDOT wants to save some money get rid of some of the pencil pushers in Richmond and let our local VDOT plow our roads.

You people need to wake up the trucks that you see sitting out there if its is interstate are contractor trucks. Thanks to the General Assembly making it law Virginias Interstate Rte. have to be contracted. If the General Assembly gets it passed and they will 70% of all VDOT'S work will be contracted. After that Virginias highway maintenance costs will skyrocket with not as good a service as the old Vdot.
