The search for a suspect involved in a bank robbery in Waynesboro is well underway.

A massive circle of crime tape surrounds the Sun Trust Bank in Waynesboro Monday afternoon. Officials had to deal with a robbery and a bomb threat.

Sgt. Kelly Walker, with the Waynesboro Police Department, says, "It was portrayed to be a bomb. It was threatened to be a bomb. So we took all the precautions necessary to treat it just as that."

Walker says a man, who was possibly wearing a disguise, charged into the bank at around 3 p.m., demanding cash and claiming to have a bomb. Walker says there was no time for emotions as they responded to the scene.

He adds, "We have a lot of things to get done in a short amount of time. It does get a little hairy, but I wouldn't describe it as being nervous."

Walker says the search for the robber had to be put on hold as priority number one became securing the bag left by the man and diffusing whatever was inside. The Virginia State Police Bomb Squad stepped in for that.

They eventually found what was an empty box with no bomb, but VSP Lt. Joe Rader says they were prepared for the worst.

Rader says "It went very smooth. No hurdles. The only delay is that it takes a while for us to get our equipment here. But there is never any hurdles when it comes to the bomb technicians."

Now, Walker says they're turning their attention to finding the robber and putting him behind bars.

Walker adds, "I don't want to overstate our confidence, but we are certainly confident that we have a lot to work with here."

There were five to ten employees in the bank when it was robbed. No one was injured and there were no customers inside the bank at the time.
