In this week's "What's Going Around," we begin with Viral Gastroenteritis.

It should be no surprise that it is spreading around the Valley considering it's the second most common illness in the United States. Anyone can get it and the main two symptoms are vomiting and diarrhea.

Symptoms appear four to 48 hours after exposure and usually last one to two days. However, you could be sick for up to ten days. The illness is caused by viruses in the intestines and is highly contagious. Doctors at Waynesboro Pediatrics are reporting numerous cases of it this week.

In Waynesboro and Harrisonburg, doctors are still seeing influenza cases. Virginia has seen widespread flu activity for eight weeks, starting January 10. If this season is anything like last year's, flu activity will start to taper off in a week or so.

Doctors also report asthma flare-ups among their patients. While an asthma attack can be triggered by any number of things, allergies are a common cause. If allergies are a trigger for you or your children, be aware that tree pollens are very high this week.
