The Virginia Department of Transportation is set to receive nearly $700 million from the Federal Stimulus Package for transportation in the Commonwealth.
The money comes at a good time for VDOT, as it is having to make drastic cutbacks.
However, the money won't be used to keep rest stops open or to make sure all VDOT residency offices around the state remain open.
Instead, the stimulus money will be used for road and bridge maintenance.
"It's very similar to working on your house. If your roof starts to have some shingles blown off, you want to fix that roof before you get any leaks into your house. We want to do the same thing with our pavement structure. If we have any cracks or depressions in the pavement we want to try to get that fixed," says Randy Kaiser, a District Construction Engineer for VDOT in Staunton.
VDOT is not sure yet what specific projects the money will be used for, but it hopes to know soon.
