A Bedford County man faces charges of selling cockfighting roosters to an undercover informant.

Avery Fitzgerald faces two felony counts of aiding, abetting or promoting animal fights. The informant testified Monday at Fitzgerald's preliminary hearing that he bought seven roosters from Fitzgerald for $100 each.

An investigator testified that a search of the 62-year-old Fitzgerald's home turned up scores of roosters, a fighting pit, metal spurs, a chemical used to stop birds' wounds from bleeding and cards with information about fights.

Fitzgerald declined to comment after the hearing.

The Bedford County grand jury is expected to consider the charges when it meets April 3.
