It works like this, you click on the Internet and suddenly your computer is making long distance calls without you knowing about it. High-speed Internet users could be vulnerable, too, if they have a fax modem attached to their phone line.

Security engineer Gary Flynn of JMU says it often happens when you download software.

"Sometimes it's in the fine print. Sometimes it's not. Basically, when you're downloading something you're giving your computer away so you have to be careful who you trust," Flynn says.

Here are some tips to keep you scam-free.

"Protect Yourself from Dialer Scams:"

- DON'T download special viewers
- READ all the license agreements
- ONLY download from reputable companies
- MAKE sure you have firewall/anti-virus software
