The governing body of the West Virginia Turnpike is preparing to raise tolls perhaps as early as June.
If approved, it would be the first toll increase in 28 years. Three years ago, a court overturned an attempt to raise tolls.
West Virginia Parkways, Economic Development and Tourism Authority member Victor Grigoraci said Thursday that the agency is facing a financial crisis that can no longer be ignored.
Manager Greg Barr said revenues were down 9.5 percent since January. If traffic doesn't pick up, Barr said the turnpike could amass a $4 million deficit by June 30.
The authority is relying on several studies and reports to help it determine how much of an increase to consider.
Barr said the earliest any hike could take effect would be in late June.
