Council member Joe Fitzgerald is the new mayor. He won the job in a 3-2 vote. Former Mayor Carolyn Frank lost her bid to keep the job. The vice mayor is council member Larry Rogers. Mayor Fitzgerald says the council needs to work harder to find some middle ground in the next two years.

"We need to bring those lines closer together. We need to look for more middle ground. We need to begin looking forward and put aside the past," says Fitzgerald.

Mayor Fitzgerald will preside over his first council meeting next Tuesday.

In Staunton there is a familiar face holding on to an old position.

Staunton Mayor John Avoli has started his sixth term after being voted in unanimously by Staunton City Council.

His new vice mayor is Roland Robinson, who takes over for the retiring Doug Manning.

"I am ready to get to work,” commented Robinson after winning the votes of his peers.
