The projected completion date of a high-voltage West Virginia-to-Maryland power transmission line is being pushed back by a year to 2014.

The two power companies planning the 280-mile line said Wednesday the change reflects a new analysis by regional grid operator PJM Interconnection of the system's reliability.

Company spokesman Ray Dotter says the line isn't needed as soon because the recession has kept down demand for electricity. But he says PJM still considers the power line critical to avoiding significant overloads in the region.

The Potomac-Appalachian Transmission Highline, or PATH, is a joint venture of Pennsylvania's Allegheny Energy Co. and Ohio's American Electric Power Co. It also will run through Virginia.

Allegheny and AEP say they plan to file project applications with state regulators by June.
