A Suffolk couple has pleaded guilty of embezzling more than $2 million from a Virginia Beach real estate company.
The U.S. Attorney's office said 47-year-old Karen A. Hiles and 59-year-old James G. Hiles entered pleas Tuesday in Norfolk to conspiracy and other charges related to the embezzlement.
According to the government, Karen Hiles worked as a bookkeeper for a developer of commercial and residential properties and conspired with her husband to forge business checks and wire transfers from 2002 through 2007.
Prosecutors said they used the money to travel, buy expensive vehicles and open a restaurant.
Sentencing is scheduled for August 3.
