Senator George Allen spent part of today
campaigning on the campus of historically black Virginia Union
University in Richmond.

Allen is in a tight race for re-election with Democratic
challenger Jim Webb.

The former UVA football player swapped stories about politics
and football and mingled with tailgating fans at the Gold Bowl
football game.

The Republican senator also attended the annual convention of
the NAACP last night in Hampton.

Allen wrote a $750 personal check to cover the cost of a
lifetime membership.

The senator in recent months has faced renewed accusations from
former college teammates that he freely used racist language in the
early 1970s.

Allen has denied the claims.
