A Bedford County man is scheduled to stand trial in June on charges of selling roosters for cockfighting.

A grand jury indicted 63-year-old Avery Fitzgerald of Coleman Falls on Tuesday on two counts of aiding, abetting or promoting animal fighting. His trial is set to begin June 23.

At a preliminary hearing in March, an undercover informant testified that he bought seven roosters from Fitzgerald.

An investigator testified that a search of Fitzgerald's home turned up scores of roosters, a fighting pit, metal spurs and cards with information about fights.

Authorities seized 39 roosters. The Eastern Shore Sanctuary and Education Center adopted eight roosters but operations coordinator Scott Polinek said Wednesday that the others had to be put down.
