AMC wants to add another CT service strictly for outpatients. It would be the third CT for AMC, but the addition has to be passed by the board of supervisors and then by the state in the spring. An AMC spokeswoman says about half of all CT services are emergencies, so this additional CT service would give more outpatients certainty on their scheduled appointments. Jeff Walker of Shenandoah Shared Hospital Services says about 25-thousand people have CT's done a year at AMC.
"This part of Virginia is growing fast and it's also aging, so those two factors drive demand and the third one, and that's the one we have a hard time trying to keep up with and anticipate is the technology improves, almost every six months," says Jeff Walker.
AMC is trying to keep up with those improvements and if this addition is approved, it is expected to open in three years.
