If you spent any time shopping this weekend, chances are you heard the pleas for help. Charities are out in full force, asking for donations, but not everyone is looking to help the needy.

The Better Business Bureau says well known charities like the Salvation Army are the ones you can trust. The problem comes from groups that pop up during the holidays, asking for cash up front.

Julie Wheeler with the Better Business Bureau in Roanoke says do not give cash. If you're going to make a contribution by check, make sure you make the check out to the organization, the full name of the organization and don't use initials and don't make it out to the individual collecting the donation."

If you would like to check out a charity for yourself, visit the Better Business Bureau online at www.vabbb.org.
