Preservation Virginia says a proposed Wal-Mart Supercenter near the Wilderness Battlefield threatens the Civil War battleground.
The private nonprofit preservation group joined a who's who of historians, congressmen and celebrities who have taken a stand against the 138,000 square foot store in Orange County.
Nearly 29,000 Union and Confederate troops were injured or killed 145 years ago at the Wilderness, located about 60 miles southwest of Washington, D.C.
In a statement Monday, the preservation group said the proposed Wal-Mart would "degrade the rural character of the battlefield" and promote commercial sprawl.
Orange County planners are scheduled to conduct a public hearing Thursday on the Wal-Mart proposal.
