The mother and friends of an accidental shooting victim in Mount Solon remember his life.
Penni Michael says her son, 16-year-old Andrew Wesley Simmons, was cleaning his gun when it went off around 3 p.m. Monday, killing him.
Simmons's friends say he was one of the happiest kids they knew.
"He was this kid with the goofiest smile. It made everybody else's day all the time," says Simmons's friend Zak Grove.
"Just awesome kid all around. Nice guy, well-mannered, fun to be around, knew what to get into, what not to get into. Just awesome kid," says friend Ronnie Mongold.
Simmons was a sophomore at Fort Defiance High School. His mother says he was very active in school activities and in the community.
"He was always going. Not hardly ever home, never. He just, anything he could do, he went, he did, he lived life to the fullest," says Michael.
Fort Defiance had grief counselors on campus Tuesday, and students were able to go home early if necessary.
"It's never easy and it's always very challenging, and you never can understand," says Fort Defiance Principal Larry Landes about losing a student.
Michal says she hopes this accident raises gun safety awareness.
"Just be extra careful, and hopefully somebody will learn and it'll save somebody else's life," says Michael.
Wednesday, students and staff at Fort Defiance will wear blue, the school's color, to honor and remember Simmons.
The Augusta County Sheriff's Office says the shooting does not appear to be foul play. No charges have been filed.
Simmons was an organ donor, which he decided to do a few years ago after his grandfather had a lung transplant.

It has been our amazing honor to have loved Andrew as one of our own for many years. He was an amazing child and grew to be an even more amazing young man. May ALL of his families - the Simmons, his step-mother, Dana and the Showker family; his sisters Ashley and Lindsay; his brothers Kyle & Caleb find comfort & peace knowing Drew is now with our dear Mark now. May Andrew's "infectious smile and spirit" give all of his friends & loved ones a sense of purpose in their own lives. Drew, your Aunt Nina & Uncle Scott will hold you in their hearts always. We love you.
Andrew was not just a kid who happened to pick up a gun at random. Anyon who knows the Simmons family know that nearly all of them are true outdoorsmen and experienced hunters. Andrew had been taught by the best and had been hunting for quite some time. To his Dad, uncles, cousins and family friends hunting was/is a way of life. What happened to Andrew is tragic.....a moment's distraction caused the loss of his beautiful life. This time it was a gun...tomorrow it may be a distraction caused by a cell phone, careless driving, you name it, it could happen. There are instances that occur each & every day in this country ie: a toddler drowning in a mop bucket, a bath-tub, a swimming pool.....all because of a brief moment's distraction. This teen-ager lost his life trying to do what he had been taught at a very young age. ALL of us, EACH and EVERY one need to focus on the moment and to be wary of distractions whether behind the wheel of a car, at the lake swimming and/fishing, or mor.
