Byrd's Health Improving But Still in Hospital

Sen. Robert C. Byrd's office says he's getting better, though the 91-year-old Democrat remains hospitalized.

Byrd's office says his doctors and family want to make sure the infection that led to the hospital stay has run its course before he's released. Byrd, the longest-serving U.S. senator in history, has been hospitalized since May 15.

Byrd has been in Congress since 1952 and was first elected to the Senate six years later.

He has been plagued by health problems in recent years, uses a wheelchair and sometimes appears frail. He has been hospitalized several times.

Byrd is strong enough to praise Supreme Court nominee Judge Sonia Sotomayor, calling her life story inspiring.
