A celebrated Harrisonburg High School football star has been charged with misdemeanor possession of marijuana. Alex Owah was cited last week after being pulled over during a traffic stop.
The charge comes less than a year after Owah was tied to an armed robbery. He was named, but not charged in the case.
The Harrisonburg Police Department says it was conducting radar enforcement from one of its units May 26 around 10:30 p.m. when an officer observed Owah's Ford Explorer speeding along East Washington Street.
When he was pulled over, the officer requested the assistance of a nearby K-9 unit. The dog alerted police to possible narcotics inside the truck and, after a search, police recovered marijuana.
Owah was not arrested at the scene, but was issued a summons on misdemeanor possession and speeding charges.
The incident came just days before Owah competed in a state-wide track meet, where he was awarded three gold medals.
Owah is expected to appear in Harrisonburg/Rockingham General District Court June 17.
