Grammy winner Kathy Mattea will perform at a North Carolina concert called Mountain Aid, aimed at raising awareness of mountaintop removal mining in Appalachia.

The Ohio Valley Environmental Coalition and Coal River Mountain Watch are sponsoring the June 19-20 event in Pittsboro, North Carolina.

Proceeds help support Pennies of Promise, a campaign to replace Marsh Fork Elementary School with one in a safer location. The school sits 225 feet from a coal silo and 400 yards from a dam filled with an estimated three-billion gallons of coal sludge.

Mountain Aid is part of an effort to raise $8 million for the relocation.

Other performers include Ben Sollee, named one of National Public Radio's "Top Ten Unknown Artists" of 2007, Donna the Buffalo and the Sim Redmond Band.
