Greene County Deputy Killed in Fiery Crash

The Greene County Sheriff's Office says a deputy was killed in a crash Thursday afternoon.

The crash, involving a tractor trailer, occurred around 1:30 p.m. on Route 230 near Standardsville.

Both the deputy's car and the truck caught fire.

Virginia State Police say an investigation into the crash in ongoing. Officials say they think the deputy was in the eastbound lane of Route 230, just north of Dundee Road when his vehicle ran off the right side of the roadway.

They say his car then came back onto the road, crossed the center line and was broadsided by a westbound tractor trailer. The impact caused the fire involving both vehicles.

The fire has been put out. The driver of the tractor trailer was not injured in the crash.

Route 230 near Dundee Road is closed as authorities clean up the crash site.

Officials are not releasing the name of the deputy pending notification of family.
