The West Virginia Parkways, Economic Development and Tourism Authority is gearing up for a vote on whether to increase tolls on the West Virginia Turnpike for the first time in 28 years.

Manager Greg Barr told board members Thursday that written public comments are still being gathered. Once Saturday's deadline passes, all written comments, along with input gathered during public hearings last month in Charleston, Fayetteville, Beckley and Princeton, will be shared with board members.

The board expects to vote June 25 on whether to increase tolls for passenger vehicles by 75 cents to $2 and for large trucks to $6.27 from $4.25.

The authority says toll increases are needed to keep the 88-mile highway from falling into further disrepair.
