Environmentalists waging a court battle against Dominion Virginia Power's Wise County coal-fired power plant under construction are supporting plans for wind turbines there.
The Wise Energy for Virginia Coalition on Thursday endorsed the proposed wind farm, which could generate up to 150 megawatts of electricity. The Clinch Coalition, which addresses land practices in national forests, also voiced support.
Dominion spokesman Ryan Frazier says officials appreciate the wide support for the joint proposal with BP Wind Energy North America Inc. He says backing has come from the coal industry and the county.
The utility and BP are proposing another wind farm in Tazewell County. Spokeswoman Kathy Selvage says the environmentalists haven't evaluated that project.
Along with the endorsement, the environmental groups urged Dominion to adopt aggressive energy-efficiency measures and to actively pursue offshore wind projects.
