The nationwide transition to digital television is less than two days away, but not all communities will be served fully after the switch.

On Friday, WHSV will terminate its analog signal, but some areas, including Bergton, will have trouble getting the signal.

Rockingham County Supervisor Pablo Cuevas started a petition to express concern about the switch. As of Wednesday, 332 people in the Bergton area had signed it.

"They're encouraging the county and TV-3 to continue to work together in making it possible to maintain the signal back in those areas," says Cuevas.

People in Bergton gathered at a community meeting in late February to express their concerns.

Cuevas says recent severe weather highlights the need for people in the Valley to have access to emergency information.

He presented the petition to WHSV general manager Tracey Jones at a meeting of the Rockingham County Board of Supervisors Wednesday.

"One person losing emergency information, if it can be prevented, is one person too many," says Jones.

County officials would like the station to take over a tower on White Grass Knob.

"We just do not feel that, for safety reasons and the commitment to our viewers, that we can take it over and have reliable service and ensure the safety of our employees whose job it is to maintain it," says Jones.

Jones says a main concern is there is no direct road access to the tower.

Rockingham County Administrator Joe Paxton says the county wants Rep. Bob Goodlatte to work with the National Forest Service to get access to the site.

"What we would like to see is the maintenance of all three of the towers to be operated by a TV station rather than by local government. But we don't want to do that to the extent that we're disenfranchising a certain group or population," says Paxton.

The county took a step last week to improve coverage. They removed Fox 5/WTTG-TV, based out of Washington, from a translator and put WHSV on it. But even with that, there's still more to be done to provide coverage to that area.

WHSV will make the digital switch at 2:30 a.m. Friday.
