The panel that approves Virginia transportation spending is preparing to slash the state highway budget, knowing things could quickly get much worse.
Declining state transportation revenues will force the Commonwealth Transportation Board to cut $538 million in road projects Thursday.
That will kill several new projects, shutter several rest areas and drastically scale back roadside mowing and motorist aid. Things would be darker if not for the nearly $700 million in federal stimulus funds Virginia will get for highways.
The Virginia Department of Transportation announced Wednesday it has already
staked its claim to more than half the $576 million in discretionary stimulus cash.
The state faced a June 29 deadline for obligating at least 50 percent of the money to a list of ready-to-go projects.

1986! We pay the same amount for our roads and bridges today as we did in 1986! Does anything cost the same as it did 23 years ago? This is not a percentage tax, there is no indexing for inflation.
The way I see it rest stops and the safety patrol are valuable services. It is a real shame that we have fools that think the only choice is to cut when a small increase in the gasoline tax could take care of the problem. I agree that road projects should be stopped for the lack of funds. To use federal stimulus funds to cover every day expenses will not create jobs. It seems the only jobs saved are the overpaid bureaucrat's. The people that actually work are being laid off.
