About two dozen families in Moundsville are returning home after rising waters forced an overnight evacuation.

A 911 dispatcher says heavy rains that continued into Thursday morning also washed out a 40-foot section of railroad track about a half mile south of town.

National Weather Service Meteorologist Bob Coblentz in Pittsburgh said between 1.5 and two inches of rain drenched the Northern Panhandle during the 24-hour period ending at 8 a.m. Thursday.

Moundsville Police Chief Jim Kudlak said most of the displaced residents spent the night with family or friends and were returning home Thursday morning.

He said the gully washer that saturated the east end of town was receding.

No other problems were reported across West Virginia.
