The economy may be affecting tourism around the country, but one hotel in Staunton says its numbers are up.

Despite people not eating out as much and not shopping as much, they are still visiting the Queen City.

"In fact, Staunton has held steady in terms of our lodging revenues", says Bill Hamilton, the Staunton Economic Development Director.

The Stonewall Jackson Hotel continues to bring in tourists and it has a full house this weekend.

Carol Simon, the hotel manager, says, "You know, we're sold out for five nights and that's five percent of their room rates for the city. So yes it's a huge impact."

Just three years ago, the city's lodging tax was raised from four percent to five percent percent and Simon says that brings a lot of money into Staunton.

She says, "That one percent ends up to be about $75,000 just for the city of Staunton."

Staunton is outperforming many other tourist destinations around the state.

Simon says, "Regions that are considered significant destinations such as WillIamsburg, the Virginia Beach are all down significantly over that same period, as is the state."

Simon believes that Staunton continues to stay within people's price range and that its charm brings them back.

She says, "We are still very affordable and people just continue to find out about Staunton, and the hospitality when they get here it will keep them coming back."
