The two candidates for Virginia's 26th district State Senate seat squared off in a debate on TV3 Wednesday evening, Oct. 1.
Independent candidate Rodney Eagle and Republican candidate Mark Obenshain talked about several issues, including the two proposals to have tolls help pay to widen Interstate 81.
Both candidates had concerns about possible tolls on cars or trucks.
Eagle said, "I would personally want to look in to see if this could be funded other than tolls, such as a fuel tax or perhaps even a sales tax on fuel."
Obenshain said, "I believe that if we're good stewards of the tax dollars that you and I send to Richmond that we can do a better job of getting those transportation dollars into the interstate, plus federal dollars are available. I oppose raising fuel taxes on Virginia's families."
Eagle said Virginia's fuel tax is one of the lowest in the country.
