Police are investigating the scene where a man was killed by an oncoming minivan, while riding his bike late Tuesday night in Rockingham County. Police are calling this a tragic accident.

Police says the victim, identified as 40-year-old Dale Frank May of Harrisonburg, was killed on impact.

Police say Benjamin Wilkins was driving a Plymouth minivan north on Route 11, when he struck and killed May around 10:30 p.m. Tuesday.

Wilkins continued driving up the road, while dragging the bike, until he realized what happened.

Police say, at that point, he ran back to the body on the ground and tried to administer CPR. At this time, police say no foul play is suspected.

"No reason to believe speed was a factor. It was just a matter of it was dark, this stretch of the roadway is not lit. We believe the bike was in the road, so it was just a matter of not being able to see it," says Virginia State Police 1st Sgt. Bryan Hutcheson.

A witness says she heard what sounded like a muffler dragging under a car, but then realized it was the bike being dragged. She describes the scene as disturbing.

"His whole entire face from the top of his head was covered in blood, saying it's a scene you never want to see," says witness Nancy Motsinger.

Virginia State Police say they'll revisit the scene Wednesday to make sure all evidence has been collected.

May's body is undergoing an autopsy in Roanoke.
