A project six years in the making for the Staunton Augusta YMCA will soon be under way.

City council members, Mayor Lacy King and a handful of others broke ground Tuesday for the new Staunton-Augusta YMCA expansion.

Construction will begin by the end of July for the $4-million addition for the center on Coalter street.

YMCA Fundraiser Campaign Chair Paul Vames says, "That's very rewarding to see that happen, because I think people give to something that's worth giving to and that certainly was the case here."

Fundraisers across the city helped make the project a reality. The expansion will include a full size basketball court, a bigger exercise area and a secluded tennis area.
