Authorities are searching for a Charlottesville man who went missing a day after leaving his Wintergreen resort home on a hike.

Officials say 45-year-old Michael Comer arrived at his home around noon Wednesday and went on a hike. His wife reported him missing when he didn't return by 7:30 p.m.

Wintergreen resort community spokeswoman Dana Quillen says two teams searched for Comer overnight but they were contending with steep terrain and wet ground. She says the Virginia Department of Emergency Management was sending search-and-rescue teams Thursday afternoon to continue the search.

The resort has 30 miles of hiking trails throughout more than 6,000 acres of wooded property.
