A two-day search for a missing hiker was downgraded Friday. Rescue teams were looking for Michael Comer of Charlottesville, who went out on a hike Wednesday and did not return.

The Nelson County Sheriff's Office says it is still treating Comer as a missing person and says no information says otherwise.

Comer went on a hike at his Wintergreen home around noon Wednesday and was reported missing that night.

Deputies say they cannot confirm whether or not Comer actually went hiking Wednesday.

Crews searched all 30 miles of steep hiking trails until Thursday night, but they were unable to find Comer. The search did not resume Friday.

Another hiker at Wintergreen, Adam Nettina, suggests the trails themselves may have been part of the problem.

He comments, "You don't always know where you're going either. It's pretty clearly marked, but you could take a wrong turn and not be on a trail, but not really realize it at the same time."

Wintergreen police and the state Department of Emergency Management were leading search efforts.

Comer is president of the Glenmore Country Club in Charlottesville.
