It's the perfect time of year to hit swimming pools and lakes but if the right precautions aren't taken, it can put children at risk.
At Todd Lake in the George Washington National Forest, kids are having fun and trying to stay safe.
Eleven-year-old Tiffany Strawderman says, "I am afraid of drowning, but I guess I know where my limits are."
Strawderman says she tries to keep an eye out for the younger kids in the water as well.
She says, "Just go to where you can stand. Don't go any further. If your little, wear a life jacket."
Safety jackets seem to be a big hit. The kids say it makes them feel more comfortable when going into deeper waters.
Lilly Ann Walker, a visitor and swimmer at Todd Lake, explained how to wear a safety tube.
She says, "And you get in it like this and you go out in the water and you can go into the deep end and swim with it."
However, the kids all agreed they wouldn't go in too deep without an adult around.
Hope Marie Taylor says, "Always watch if the parents are watching and swim by the parents."
As Carter Bice warns, always watch what's going on around you.
Bice says, "Don't hit anything that could take a hunk out of you on the nose. That's one big way to stay safe. Another way is if you are fishing don't hook anything but a fish."
