Episcopalians Split

Nine Episcopal churches in Virginia whose
members have voted to leave and align with Nigeria's Anglican
archbishop have received their first letter from their new leader.

In a letter sent last week, Archbishop Peter Akinola addressed
some concerns about his support for a proposed law in Nigeria that
would make same-sex union ceremonies illegal.

The law also would ban public affection between same-sex couples
and private meetings of gay advocacy groups.

Akinola says he recognizes there are concerns about individual
human rights that must be addressed, but he didn't say what he
would propose changing.

Until now, Akinola has simply urged passage of the measure,
though a spokesman has said the Church of Nigeria doesn't believe
in "witch-hunting homosexuals."
