Opposition has surfaced to a proposed whitewater course on the Potomac River at Cumberland.

Local historian Gary Clites of nearby Carpendale, West Virginia told the Cumberland Times-News that the proposed removal of a dam would ruin a two-mile stretch of placid water behind the structure that is better suited for motorboats.

The whitewater plan was pitched by a Frostburg State University professor of recreation and parks management.

The proposal will be discussed by public officials and business leaders at a July 22 meeting organized by the Allegany County Chamber of Commerce.
