There were plenty of empty parking spots at this rest stop on 81 South, just before the Verona exit Monday night.

Some folks did stop in for a candy bar or to use the rest rooms. They have places to go and people to see.

"We're seeing a few cousins, aunts and uncles for the holidays. A Christmas outside of Christmas," says Sean Doyle.

"I'm on my way back to Charlottesville after doing the family thing," says one traveler. These are road conditions travelers faced this Christmas night.

Braving the weather maybe better than fighting the traffic Tuesday. The rewards of leaving early are worth it for this Christmas traveler.

From what we could tell, traffic was fairly light on 81. Most of the people we spoke to said it was wet and visibility is down, but all in all its not horrible driving.

However, people seem to be driving responsibly on this foggy Christmas night

If you are headed out, just remember to take it slow.
