State employees donated more than
3.5 million dollars to 1,400 local, state and
national charities this year through the Commonwealth of Virginia
That's less than last year, when hurricanes Katrina and Rita
helped boost donations to more than four million dollars.
This year, more than 17,000 employees in 120 state agencies
gave by cash, check and payroll deductions. Giving is expected to
hit 3.7 million dollars when the drive closes its
books in February.
The Commonwealth of Virginia campaign has generated more than 30 million dollars since it was created in 1997.
Until then, the state had worked with organizations like United
Way, which distributes funds to causes opposed to by some workers.
Now Virginia employees can direct contributions to virtually any
tax exempt organization.
