A Mount Crawford woman says smoke alarms saved her family's lives after their house was struck by lightning.

Barbie Snuffin installed smoke detectors shortly before a fire broke out in her home.

The smoke alarms were given to her by one of her son's friends as part of an Eagle Scout program.

The Rockingham County Volunteer Firefighters Association supervised the project, called "Get Alarmed, Virginia!"

Snuffin says she now realizes the importance of the devices.

"Don't think it can't happen to you, and don't think you don't need what it takes. They're not expensive. If you can start with one that's free, it's a good way to start. And then definitely be able to use your local resources," says Snuffin.

Wednesday night, CiCi's Pizza and the Harrisonburg Fire Department are teaming up. Anyone who orders a large pizza will get it for free.

Firefighters will deliver the pizza, check your smoke alarms, and fix or replace them if they're not working properly.
