In this week's What's Going Around, the weather is warming up but kids in the Valley are coming down with colds.

Waynesboro pediatrician Dr. Pete Devries says cold viruses are going around. Symptoms appear about one to three days after exposure.

According to the Mayo Institute, infected people may have a runny nose, itchy or sore throat, cough, congestion, body aches and possibly a low grade fever, up to 102 degrees. Most people recover in about a week or two.

The average adult will have two to four colds a year but children may have as many as six to ten.

Mouth sores caused by viral stomatitis are spreading among children in the Waynesboro area. Sores are caused by Hand, Foot and Mouth disease or a herpes virus. This is common among young children but can be extremely painful.

Devries says his patients with this are also experiencing a high fever. The sores may cause drooling and difficulty swallowing. Parents whose kids have this need to make sure their child is getting enough fluids to avoid dehydration.

Up and down the Valley, doctors warn that the H1N1 virus is still present and spreading. The Central Shenandoah Health District says we are likely to see new cases in Virginia this summer.

However, Devries says he has not seen any new cases in the last week.

WHSV Poll
A committee in the House of Delegates has sent a bill to the House floor that would allow private, faith-based adoption agencies to discriminate against prospective parents based on their sexual orientation. Would you support this?

Yes, I think if it is a private organization it's okay.
No, there should be no discrimination.
It should depend on a case by case basis.
