Hispanics in Harrisonburg say they're hopeful that Judge Sonia Sotomayor will be confirmed by the Senate and become the first Hispanic ever to sit on the high court.

Latinos in the Valley say they can relate to Sotomayor's modest upbringing. Customers and the owner of Mi Mercadito say they work hard, just like Sotomayor has in the past, to earn a living and support a family.

However, they hope the judge "doesn't forget where she came from, if she is confirmed."

Mi Mercadito customer Joe Rodriguez says, "I think it's good. I think she has a very strong background and I think she will help us, the Latino community. We need Spanish people in the Congress and people who can help us and people who know our background."

Through a translator, store owner Eutimio Martinez says, "Like most of the Hispanics who comes into the government nowadays, [they] forget where they're raised, [where their] background comes from."

Background is the key word Monday for Hispanics in the Valley as well as Senate Republicans and Democrats.

Early Monday at the hearings, Panel Chairman Patrick Leahy suggested Sotomayor could be just as honorable as Thurgood Marshall, while Republican Jeff Sessions questioned whether the judge could rule impartially.

Overall, Democratic leaders feel Sotomayor will be confirmed.
