Rocky Top Fire Continues

Firefighters have a new plan to put the Rocky Top Fire out once and for all.

The fire's grown about 250 acres since the beginning of the weekend. That means you'll be seeing a lot more smoke and possibly flames at night.

But, firefighters say the fire will stay within the park. Their new plan is to build containment lines almost to the edge of the park, which means around 2,000 acres will be lost to flames.

"Rather than trying to keep the fire in small numbers we've realized it's a lot easier to build those fire lines further down the mountain where the terrain isn't as steep it's safer for our firefighters," Julena Campbell says.

About 10 trails in the area are closed right now because of the fire. You can call the park at 540-999-3500 to find out which ones to steer clear of.
