A number of rest stops will soon be closing along Interstate 81, and travelers are going to be looking elsewhere for a place to stop.

Some businesses around the rest stops say they are torn about the impact closing those areas could have on their sales.

Franklin Martinez from Jalisco Mexican Restaurant has high hopes.

Martinez says, "They have many businesses around the rest area and they come to the business that is close to the rest area and it helps the business grow."

Restaurants off of the interstate, such as Jalisco, are banking on a business boost and are looking to cash in on a new surge of customers.

However, Martinez says he isn't completely convinced it's going to turn out this way.

He adds, "Many people that make stops in the rest area come to the area to stay in town. They come to Bridgewater and Verona and even go to Harrisonburg."

He says the rest areas are a big part of the Valley's economy because they leading out-of-towners to restaurants like Jalisco.

Martinez adds, "If they close the rest area, many people aren't going to have a place to stop and they are going to continue their trip and not spend money in the area."

While Martinez is crossing his fingers for the moment, he says it's something he'd rather not rely on.

He says, "We hope the rest areas continue there, because they help us to grow."

A total of four rest stop in the area are scheduled to close Tuesday.
