Firefighters are battling two wildfires in eastern Rockingham County.
One is familiar. The blaze that charred much of Rocky Top in Shenandoah National Park has rekindled. Park officials thought they had the Rocky Top fire controlled on June 28, but it jumped a containment line last week. Park fire information officer Julena Campbell says the lines did NOT work because of the rocky, steep terrain.
Campbell says the park service will now build fire lines below the blaze and burn off fuel for the bigger fire. They hope to contain it by Thursday, but predict the blaze will char at least 2,000 acres before it's extinguished.
Ten trails in the park are closed. Fireworks set off on Massanutten Peak Saturday night sparked a fire there. Forest warden Mike Armstrong says the blaze is in a steep, inaccessible area just above the resort's ski slopes.
