West Virginia State Police say a 61-year-old Indiana man was the lone occupant of a single-engine plane that crashed near Ravenswood.
State Police Sgt. Michael Baylous identified the pilot as William Huff. No hometown was available.
Huff's plane crashed near Skull Run Road about 10 p.m. Thursday.
The Federal Aviation Administration says the Cirrus SR-22 left York, Nebraska shortly before 5 p.m. Thursday and was headed to an airport near Indianapolis.
FAA spokeswoman Laura Brown says air traffic controllers last talked to Huff about 7:25 p.m. Thursday when he requested permission to descend to a lower altitude.
She says communication became garbled and controllers lost contact with Huff about 20 minutes later.
North American Aerospace Defense Command spokesman Michael Kucharek said two National Guard F-16s were dispatched to track the plane but Huff appeared to be unconscious.
The jets followed the plane until it crashed.
