West Nile deaths drop
(Washington-AP) -- This year's West Nile virus season was less
severe than most health experts expected.
The number of deaths from the virus in Virginia, D-C and Maryland dropped by almost half from last year, despite concerns about the abnormally large mosquito population.
Five people died in Maryland and one in Virginia. No one in the District died of the virus. Last year, West Nile claimed seven from Maryland, two from Virginia and two from the District.
But the number of cases in Maryland more than doubled, while
Virginia and the District reported fewer cases. Officials are NOT
Experts attribute the drop in deaths to widespread education on
how to prevent West Nile.
