Folks in one Rockingham County town now have a rescue squad of their own. In September, the Elkton Emergency Squad opened a new station in McGaheysville.
Tom Schroeder, president of the Elkton Emergency Squad, says the McGaheysville and Massanutten regions have grown a lot in the last five years, leading to an increase in emergency calls.
Building the new station in McGaheysville has cut response time in half, Schroeder says.
"On a good day it takes about 12 minutes to get to the top of Massanutten, to the ski lodge," he said, explaining how long it used to take emergency personnel to arrive from Elkton. "Now we can be there in five, six minutes."
Schroeder adds that McGaheysville residents have welcomed their new neighbor with open arms.
"A lot of the neighbors, right here in the immediate area around the station, we've actually been on calls here since we're open," he said. "They say they're blessed now to have that type of service available to them that fast and right here."
