Sen. Robert C. Byrd, the longest serving U.S. senator in history, is grieving the loss of the man he called his best friend in the Senate.

Byrd said in a statement Wednesday that Sen. Ted Kennedy was talented, imaginative and creative.

Byrd recalled a 1968 visit Kennedy made to Morgantown, when the Massachusetts Democrat talked about how much West Virginia meant to his family.

Kennedy's brother, John, won the 1960 Democratic primary here before becoming the first Catholic president. His West Virginia victory was seen as a crucial test with Protestant voters.

Byrd called for civility in the ongoing debate over health care, which he said would be a tribute to Kennedy.

WHSV Poll
A committee in the House of Delegates has sent a bill to the House floor that would allow private, faith-based adoption agencies to discriminate against prospective parents based on their sexual orientation. Would you support this?

Yes, I think if it is a private organization it's okay.
No, there should be no discrimination.
It should depend on a case by case basis.
