Seven-year-old Dallas Conover desperately wants a puppy for Christmas. And, he is not the only one.

There is a good chance someone on your list wants a puppy or a kitten. But, Debbie Caywood, director of the Augusta County SPCA says sometimes owners just aren't prepared for the responsibility.

"People were getting them as gifts and they would take them home for Christmas, and they were getting returned, because there was so much stress and extra work already, that they didn’t have time for a new pet in the household," says Caywood.

And, Bringing an animal back to the shelter after taking them home can be very traumatic experience for the animal. Most people also don't realize the financial responsibility that comes with owning a pet.

"You have to be financially prepared to take it to the vet for checkups and do the vaccinations," says Caywood. The SPCA offers classes for new pet owners to ensure you get adjusted to the new addition in the family.
